What is Clomiphene Citrate?

Clomiphene Citrate is a research liquid that works as a selective estrogen receptor modulator, inhibiting estrogen receptors located in the hypothalamus. Tested on laboratory animals, it has been found to help with fertility with its ability to induce ovulation through a decrease in estrogen binding.

Estrogen plays a role in the regulation of ovulation in female animal test subjects. When the hormone estrogen is at a high level, the production of two other hormones, FHS and LH, is reduced. Both of these hormones are needed to signal an ovulation period. Low levels of FHS and LH can often be a cause of infertility.

Clomiphene Citrate is not only being studied for its ability to treat infertility in female animal subjects, it has also shown potential in helping infertility in male animal test subjects. Infertility in both male and female test subjects is often caused by an inappropriate level of FHS and LH. Clomiphene Citrate has been shown to raise the levels of theses hormones to induce ovulation in the female animals and raise levels of testosterone and sperm production in male animal test subjects.

Clomiphene Citrate Side Effects

Most research liquids come with side effects, some being more serious than others. Administering Clomiphene Citrate to animal test subjects should be done by experienced technicians and doses should be carefully monitored as to not cause overdoses. Clomiphene Citrate works by altering levels of the hormone estrogen in the bloodstream; this can often lead to some serious side effects in animal test subjects.

Clomiphene Citrate Mechanism of Action

Clomiphene Citrate is non-steroidal and acts as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), inhibiting estrogen through competition. It can do this by binding to hypothalamic estrogen receptors, preventing estrogen from being able to bind. This tricks an animal test subject’s brain into thinking less estrogen has been produce, causing an increase in the production of FHS and LH which is known to lead towards an ovulation period.

Estrogen

While estrogen is a factor in the fertility of the animal test subjects, high levels of it in the bloodstream will inhibit the production of FHS and LH.

FSH

Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a hormone involved in the fertility of animals. It is released by the pituitary gland and is often a cause for female animal test subjects to be infertile. It is responsible for the development of eggs in female animals, and it even comes into play in the development of sperm in male animals.

LH

Luteinizing Hormone (LH) is another hormone that is important in reproduction. It helps regulate ovulation, and can be another cause for infertility in animal test subjects. An increase of LH in the blood is responsible for triggering ovulation and will happen 24-36 hours prior to the start.

LH is also vital in male test subjects, as it plays a hand in the testosterone levels and the production of sperm.

Animal Tests on Male Rats

Using male rats as test subjects, it was found that Clomiphene is also effective in increasing the levels of LH and FSH. This has the ability to increase the sperm production in the testes due to the release of testosterone. Male rats that were once infertile, gained fertility with the use of Clomiphene Citrate and an administration of testosterone.

Research potential for Clomiphene Citrate

Scientists are currently testing Clomiphene Citrate for use in ovulation induction and to reverse anovulation in animal test subjects. There is a lot of future potential for this research liquid. However, there is still much more to be discovered about this compound. Clomiphene Citrate is still in a testing state and should not be used on any human subjects.

With a structure built like the hormone estrogen, Clomiphene Citrate works through competition with the estrogen. Without the estrogen binding to the receptors, there is an increased release of LH and FSH in the pituitary, which causes the ovaries to produce a mature egg. It has been found to successfully treat infertility problems in both male and female animal test subjects. Because it alters levels of estrogen, it is common for there to be some serious side effects.
