What is GnRH (Triptorelin)?
GnRH (Triptorelin), or gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, is a peptide consisting of a chain of 10 amino acids that form a decapeptide structure. Its main function is to stimulate the pituitary gland. In animal test subjects, the naturally occurring peptide is released from the neurons located in the hypothalamus and has an effect on the pituitary gland. It was discovered to be responsible for lowering production of two secretions; LH and FHS. These secretions are accountable for the regulation of the sexual organs and reproduction in animal test subjects.
Functions of GnRH
After a number of scientific studies on animal test subjects, it was determined that GnRH (Triptorelin) is responsible for three important functions. The first is the constant stimulation of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain, is responsible for regulating the animal test subject’s endocrine system. It regulates systematic processes including growth, functionality of the thyroid, pain relief, metabolism, temperature regulation, and functionality of the sexual organs.
The next function is the lowering of the production of the secretion known as luteinizing hormone (LH.) In the presence of GnRH, it was found that LH production is shown to decrease. This hormone is responsible for regulating the estrogen production, and testosterone production.
The last function is a decrease in production of the secretion FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone). It is responsible for the regulation ovulation, development, growth, and pubertal maturation. As with LH, FSH plays a role in the process of reproduction.
Future Studies on GnRH
Due to the way GnRH has an affect on the endocrine system and the lowering of secretions, studies on animal test subjects were used to determine if these peptides could play a role in fixing issues pertaining to a malfunction of the endocrine system.
One test was to determine if GnRH could treat animal test subjects found to have hormone responsive cancers. Some cancers, such as breast and prostate, are linked to the secretion of luteinizing hormones and its regulation of testosterone and estrogen. It was theorized, because GnRH has the ability to decrease the production of LH, it would be able to slow or prevent the effects of these types of cancers.
Another theory would be GnRH’s potential to treat animal test subjects with estrogen dependent conditions such as, uterine fibroid and endometriosis. This is due to the decrease in the secretion of LH, which in turn can also decrease the production of estrogen. GnRH has a lot of potential for research on animal test subjects.
There is still much more research that needs to be done for GnRH. This peptide has a lot of unknown potential dangers and should not be used on humans ever. It should be handled in a laboratory setting by experienced technicians.
Side Effects of GnRH (Triptorelin)
An important part of studying synthetic peptides is to figure out the kind of side effects they cause. This includes both positive and negative effects. Negative side effects range from mild to more serious.
Some common negative side effects that are mild are as followed:
- Joint pain
- General discomfort
- Muscle pain
Some less common side effects found to occur are:
- Bladder pain
- Bloody urine
- Cloudy urine
- Blurry vision
- Decrease urine volume or frequency
- Trouble breathing
- Swelling of extremities and face
It was also discovered that the use of GnRH in animal test subjects could lead to more serious negative side effects including high blood pressure and heart disease. While GnRH is not currently safe for human consumption, it has been used in a laboratory settings on animal test subjects.
